Rethinking the War on Drugs: Why Decriminalization and Healthcare Reform Are Essential

My wish is that our government would take a real look at how other countries are handling their own drug problems.

My opinion is the “war on drugs” was one of several inventions of the Reagan administration that were the most expensive, least effective “solutions” to societal issues.

We could send someone through a treatment program somewhere in the neighborhood of 25 times for the cost of sending them to prison for five years.

Two things need to happen for that. Healthcare costs need to come more in line with the rest of the world, and decriminalizing drug use.

The first because we have artificially high costs due to a for-profit industry between us and our doctor. The insurance industry is sucking us dry.

The second because this is a health issue, not a criminal one. People don’t learn how to not use drugs in prison. They learn about other drugs and how to support their habit.
